Crocheted Butterfly Pin Pattern

Butterflies were found all over The Compassionate Friends conference this weekend. They are a very meaningful symbol for bereaved parents. I was inspired to make some little Butterfly Pins to give to some of the people who made my first TCF Conference so rewarding. I came up with a variation on a common pattern for larger crocheted butterflies.

A few people who saw me making them asked for the pattern, so I promised to post it so they could make their own. I will add a picture when I am able, but here is my first attempt at writing up the pattern. Please let me know if it needs any clarification. Have fun!

Use G hook and worsted weight yarn (I used Lion Brand Chenille, but any leftover yarn will do)

Ch 5, join to 5th ch from hook with slst to form ring.

Row 1: Working inside the ring, ch 3, 2dc, ch1, (3dc, ch1) 7 times, join in top of ch3.
Row 2: Slst in next dc, 5dc in next ch1 space, (slst in 2nd dc, 5dc in next ch1 space) 7 times.
Joining: With hook at top, fold in half to form butterfly. Insert hook through same dc as 1st and 5th slst from Row 2, slst through both, finish off. Weave in ends. Insert a safety pin (or metal pin back) through one side of the butterfly, pull through stitches so open part of pin is on outside.
