Sampler Square #5 - Mini Waves

Designed by Laurinda Reddig of ReCrochetions

Part 2: Combining Stitches!

Stitches Used: single crochet (sc), half double crochet (hdc), double crochet (dc), treble crochet (trc).

New Stitches /Techniques:
Treble Crochet (tr):
YO 2 times, insert your hook into stitch, YO, pull hook out of stitch. You should have 4 loops on your hook. YO, pull through 2 loops. YO, pull through 2 loops. YO, pull through 2 loops.

Back Loop Only: Insert hook into center of top of the stitch, under only the back loop and out the back of the stitch you are working in rather than through both loops.

Pattern:This pattern is now exclusively available in the ReCrochetions Presents: Rowan’s Learn to Crochet Sampler Afghan Book. Available in Right and Left-handed Editions (see links -->). The book also contains 4 more simple baby blanket patterns and a newborn hat, and 30 complete step-by-step tutorial.

Notes: Alternating stitch size creates a subtle wave in the rows of this pattern. Waves are generally worked even wider using two of each stitch as you go across, but then you could not see the pattern in such a small square. The Back Loop Only ridges give both sides of this finished square a distinctively different wave pattern. Choose which look you like better and use that as the “Right Side” (rs) of your work, keeping that side facing you when you work the Edging around the square.

This week I started squares for yet another version of this sampler using Sugar'n'Cream 100% Cotton Yarn. I love working with cotton yarn, and not just because it is a natural fiber which I would personally prefer for blankets and toys for my own children. Although this cotton yarn is considered "Worsted Weight" it is generally worked with a smaller hook than most acrylic wosrted weight yarns. As a result my squares are coming out smaller, so I am working 2 rows of edging for each square.

  2. Thanks Carisa, this is one of the stitch combos I came up with to include more new techniques. Remember that either side can be the "right" side, they both look cool. Before you work the edging decide which side you want to see most, and keep that side facing you when you work the edge.

  3. Hi...I have a question...row 4 states there's 28 stitches, but I'm only counting 27. Please tell me what I'm doing wrong. I'm losing my mind! Other than this temporary fit of insanity...I'm so excited about this blanket.

  4. Oh my! I do not know how you are the first one to have this problem. I clarified the instructions. Try it again and it should come out right this time. :) Thanks for joining us!

  5. Thanks Laurie...after many attempts, I figured the dc before the trc. just like you said. I've only been crocheting for about 6 mos so I'm excited that I was able to figure it out without any help. Thanks for clarifying.
