Day 16: Learning and Quilt Squares: Part 4

Quilting with a Hook

And finally, the last four "Geometric Squares" are all quilt-inspired...
Square #13: Double Friendship Star
The Double Friendship Star is worked in half double crochet. I chose hdcs for this one because the pattern called for a total number of rows that is easily divisible by 3, to create equal parts in the top, middle, and bottom. The hdc stitches were perfect. I intentionally chose a number of stitches for all of the squares that is divisible by 2, 3, 4, and even 6.

Square #14: Card Trick

The Card Trick is another traditional quilt square that needed 3 equal sections to create the diagonal lines. With all of those diagonal lines, this particular square may take a little more blocking than the rest to get even edges, but once attached to other squares in a blanket those slight pulls where the corners of the "cards" meet the edges will even out.

Square # 15 Eight Pointed Star
The Eight Pointed Star is the third quilt square (along with #13 and #14) that were inspired by my very first sewn 9-patch quilt (as seen in the Wedding Quilt Post). I chose double crochets because the spacing of the points does not need to be equal. I experimented with how to create the points and found that for the outside points a 'half-color' stitch creates a sharper point. But at the center, where four colors all meet together, increases and decreases looked much better.

Square #16: Snail's Trail
Finally, the Snail's Trail, the first pattern that started the entire quilt theme for my book. This probably my favorite square, even after making 39 of them for the book. Yep, that's right, 39!! Once you have learned the basics, this is the perfect square to master double crochets in reversible intarsia. When you get to the center you can even practice my useful little tricks for avoiding extra ends to weave it that I refer to as the "Bridge" and the "Switchback". Both these little tricks are included in the Yarn Management section at the end of my book, and they both make me grin every time I get to use them in this square. I hope you enjoy them too.
