Hooked on Hand Dyed: Cosmic Garden Cowl Pattern

Introducing my newest Hooked on Hand Dyed crochet design, made in the delightfully soft BFL and Tussah Silk yarn from Shaggy Bear Farms in Scio, Oregon.  The Cosmic Garden Cowl will encircle you in a lacy field studded with stars of bright bursts of color. The latticework of light weight Blue Faced Leicester and Tussah Silk yarn wraps gently around your neck and shoulders, cozy but brilliant like a warm summer night in the garden.

I had been thinking that this yarn blend might be nice for a more complicated lace pattern in the cowl. But as soon as I saw the confetti-like splashes of color in this yarn, I decided the lace should be more simple and repetitive to show off the colors rather than a fancy lace pattern. Crocheted in the round using only chains, single crochets, and double crochets to create a trellis of stars, this comfy cowl is a breeze to make and wear.

When I began my Hooked On Hand Dyed project, I was a little concerned that I should have started in the colder months, with crochet patterns for the Fall and Winter Seasons, warm woolen hats, mitts, and scarves. But I'm actually having a lot of fun coming up with light-weight designs for Spring and Summer.

I have never been a big shawl wearer, but I am entranced with the possibilities of these light weight yarns and fibers. The Forget-Me-Knot Shawl and Cosmic Garden Cowl are my latest favorites to toss over my shoulders as I head out the door on a cool Spring morning.
